Qualifiers (1970’s)

(Games marked Q1  are SFC Qualifiers via Intermediate amalgamations to qualify for SFC Proper)

Between 1972 and 1979 amalgamations made up of IFC clubs competed for a place in the SFC proper. This qualifier series was part of the overall SFC structure with the winner progressing to Preliminary Round of SFC proper (apart from 1976 and 1979 when they went into the First or Second Round). Killoe Young Emmets amalgamated with Seán Connollys and Abbeylara in SFC Qualifiers from 1972-1977 using abbreviated team names as follows:

1972: Killoe/Connollys
1973: Killoe/Connollys
1974: Killoe/Connollys
1975: Killoe/Abbeylara
1976: Killoe/Connollys
1977: Killoe/Connollys

Killoe won the Intermediate Championship in 1977 and gained promotion to senior grade.

Qualifiers (1980’s)

(Games marked Q2  are SFC Qualifiers via Section A or B to qualify for SFC Proper)

In the 1980’s Killoe competed in some years in Section A or B Qualifier route to advance to the SFC proper.

1981: The SFC consisted of 7 teams with an 8th coming from the winner of a Section A Qualifier group. Killoe played St. Munis Forgney in Section A, and won to advance to the Section A Final Dromard were victorious in the final and advanced to the Quarter Final of the SFC proper. The Killoe v Dromard Section A final was effectively the first ‘Senior B Championship’ final (albeit called Section A in 1981 and Section B from 1982).

1982: Similar SFC structure to 1981 but Section A now Section B and instead of the winner qualifying for SFC Proper, the Section B finalists both qualified to advance to the SFC proper while the Section B Final was a separate unrelated game with it’s own title (Senior B Championship). Killoe played in the Section B Qualifier and beat Legan Sarsfields and Fr. Manning Gaels to qualify for the SFC proper at the Quarter Final stage. Unlike in 1981, the Section B Final was played after the SFC was completed and did not have any impact on the pathway to or through the SFC. In that Section B final St. Marys Granard beat Killoe by 1-10 to 1-7. This was the ‘Senior B Championship’ final.

1983: Similar SFC structure to 1982. Killoe played in the Section B Qualifier route and by beating Dromard to advance to the SFC proper at the Quarter Final stage. The Section B Final vs Carrickedmond was then played after the SFC was completed and did not have any impact on the pathway to or through the SFC. Killoe beat Carrickedmond in that Section B final by 0-7 to 0-6. This was the ‘Senior B Championship’ final.

1987: Similar SFC structure to 1983. Killoe played in the Section B Qualifier route and by beating St. Marys Granard in the Section B semi-final, qualified for the SFC proper at the Quarter Final stage. The Section B Final vs Ballymahon was played two weeks after the SFC was completed and did not have any impact on the pathway to or through the SFC. Killoe beat Ballymahon in that Section B final by 3-13 to 3-5. This was the ‘Senior B Championship’ final.

It should be noted that the Section or Section B Championship Finals in 1982, 1983 & 1987 were played after SFC competition was completed and did not influence or inform progress in that years SFC competition. All other qualifier games cited in the list above were part of the qualification pathway for that years SFC, hence their inclusion in the list. In 1981 the winner of Section A qualified for the SFC Quarter Final stage. After 1981 qualification for the Quarter Final stage of the SFC Proper was determined by reaching the semi-final of the Section B (or Senior B) Competition, while the Section B (Senior B) Final itself was then played later once the SFC was complete.

Qualifiers (2000’s)

(Games marked Q2  are SFC Backdoor Qualifiers within SFC Proper)

A series of backdoor qualifiers were introduced from 2000. Initially a ‘Senior B’ route was introduced for the 7 losing teams after Round 1 along with the final team drawn from the pot during the SFC draw. The winner of this Senior B competition would qualify for the Quarter Final stage of the SFC proper. In 2003 the qualifier structure changed such that a series of Qualifier rounds took place after Round 1 and Quarter Final stages for teams losing out in those respective stages. From 2009 the qualification structure moved to a group structure ahead of normal knockout.
