Senior Club Notes 21st December 2015

Preparations are well under way for our annual dinner dance which will take place this year in the Landmark Hotel Carrick On Shannon on Saturday night the 9th of January. Tickets priced at €30 are available now from all committee members or Jimmy Halpin on 086 4107389. Tickets are also available in the Olde Forge and Begleys bar and shop. A bus will run to and from the event on the night with details for same to be confirmed next week.  As usual a great nights entertainment is guaranteed at this event.

Our annual general meeting will take place on Sunday the 3rd of January in the club house at 4pm. All club members are asked to attend. In recent years our club has grown to be one of the biggest in the county and is certainly at the heart of the parish. There is a huge amount of work involved in running the club from all levels right up to the chairman’s position. However as usual we have  a small amount of people carrying a large burden of responsibility. As such we are actively encouraging more people to become involved in the management and running of the club. Whilst you may not wish to become part of the committee, there are several minor roles on sub committees and small jobs and positions that need filling within the club. If you wish to become involved in any role around the club, please make an effort to attend the agm. Remember all paid up club members are entitled to vote at the agm in the election of officers and any other matter up for decision.

Our annual charity fun game marrieds versus singles will as usual take place on St Stephens Day in Emmet Park at 2pm. All monies raised on the day will be donated to Saint Christopher’s.

Our Christmas Lotto draw took place on Sunday night in Begleys and the numbers drawn were 1,2,14 and 19. There was no jackpot winner. €20 winners were Catherine Mulvihill, Mostrim, Jimmy Bracken, C/O Begleys, Frank Rowley, New York City, David Ward, Rhyne and Shane Donohoe, Kelleter. The sellers prize went to Noel Devaney. As it is Christmas we held a double draw fro €20 winners and the extra winners were Declan Donoghue, Carrigallen, Kevin Prunty, Dooroc, Margaret McCormack, Kiltyreher, Declan Blessingtn, Knockloughlin and Pat Manicle, Farnagh. Well done to all the winners and thanks again to all who have played or assisted in running our lotto all year.

As 2015 comes to a close we look back on a year sprinkled with huge highs and lows. On the playing fields 2015 will be remembered as a year when we put back to back Sean Connolly cups together for the first time in our history. This was a fantastic achievement and was backed up by retaining the leader cup. We had a great run in then Leinster championship before becoming undone in the semi final in Portlaoise on a day to forget. We also tasted victory in the Division 3 league and the Gilmore cup as well as the reserve 1 league. Indeed our junior team were undefeated all year until the championship final when they sadly fell to Mostrim.  However we also managed to lose 4 important finals over the course of the year, the senior B championship, the junior championship, the minor and under 21 championships. That being said it was very encouraging to be in the finals of all competitions we entered and a haul of 13 trophies from the 18 competitions our club entered from under 10 up to senior is a highly  respectable return for the year. Well done to everyone involved with all teams. Also well done to club captain Michael Quinn on his call up to the Irish team in November.

Off the field we had some very sad moments during the year, particularly the tragic death of the great Terry McCormack. This cast a huge shadow over the parish and the club early in the spring and his loss is still felt immensely. To his entire family we again sympathize. How the lads bounced back to play such leading roles in the championship is testament to their mental strength and dedication to the club.

Finally we wish all our supporters a very happy Christmas and best wishes for 2016. Please God 2016 will be as successful as the year just gone. Thanks again to everyone who assisted us in any way whatsoever through out the year.
